Michigan doesn’t license or regulate independent living communities. When not associated with an assisted living facility, memory care or nursing home, an independent living community is considered “stand-alone.” Stand-alone communities are not regulated but they are required to follow Michigan’s state rental laws. Depending on the county or municipality where it’s located, a community may also be required to adhere to local government regulations.
The following examples highlight some of Michigan’s rental laws:[03]
Fair housing laws in Michigan are in place to help ensure renters are not denied housing because of a disability. While each situation is unique, individuals are entitled to reasonable accommodations to provide them with an equal opportunity to enjoy the property. Examples of accommodations may include structural modifications, permission for a service animal, or exceptions to some rules.[04]
Michigan independent living communities typically enforce minimum age requirements which are most commonly either 55+ or 62+. Additional admission requirements can usually be found posted on a facility’s website.
