Steer clear!

I had to move my Mom out of the Oaks after she ended up in the Hospital due to lack of care! She didn't even last a month at this place and no one communicated that there were any problems or issues! I lost $[fee removed]k in community fee and paid a whole month that Mom wasn't even there for a whole month while in the hospital! I would steer clear of this place- promises made for care were not kept! Just to clarify: Mom went to hospital [date removed] after a week of Delerium starting the 2nd, she discharged from hospital on [date removed] and I had to move her belongings out of Oaks into the new place right before discharge so she didn't have to go back to Oaks. I had ZERO confidence that they would care for her! I live out of State and needed to know she was being cared for. I was constantly following up with the Oaks to make sure her care was being tended to and they claimed everything was great- but it wasn't!

Oaks at Charleston review

Turnover of quality of staff at the oaks is an ongoing challenge, especially for the oaks at Charleston. However, these roles (the general staff) are demanding. Not sure I could do it. I am no nurse But the social interaction is really important. The physical and occupational therapy, access to physicians, etc... was a plus. Adhering to a schedule (meals, etc.) is important. Both locations provide those elements.

Our families experience

My honest answer is that Mom did not have a great or even decent experience at Oaks. Her clothing and other valuables were often (over and over) stolen from the workers, who had no accountability as to their theft, by management. In addition, the food they served was really horrible! Many days they served potato chips as a 'vegetable'. The bottom line is that after Mom repeatedly said to me: 'I feel so violated.' (From the ongoing thievery), I chose to move her to Legacy Village, where we have had a much better experience. I feel that the problem originates from the top. The Executive Director at Oaks was always behind locked/closed wood door; completely unavailable and not engaged.

Not happy

I don't recommend this place, the people that work there are nice but they do not take care of the people. I made sure that my husband got a shower every other day and I changed his sheets on the bed, I took his clothes and sheets home to wash. He was there for 2 months and his bathroom and floor got cleaned once. They didn't have to do anything for him and they tried to go up on his rent saying he was a level 3,he was not even the level 2 they said he was Every time I went there he was in his room. Even the workers there said he was no problem. They didn't even have to do anything for him. The meals were the cheapest they could go, they had pizzas and sandwiches alot.b.

Low level of care.

Overall, we were not pleased @ the Oaks and moved him to another facility in January. The staff was overworked and there never enough caregivers. Sometimes there was only 1 caregiver for 10 residents. Phone calls were never returned. When I made my decision to move [name removed], the director was quite belligerent and very rude, even after I told her my oldest daughter had just been placed in hospice care that day. So unfortunately, I am not the person to leave any favorable comments. [name removed] passed away in April. Apparently, they were making some changes when we left: more staff etc. but we had heard that before. It may have improved. One day the activities director was with the residents by herself.

Oaks at Tucker

Everything was below average. They had a lot of turnover. No security. Lobby/Front desk wasnt always covered. They had people wandering into other peoples rooms late at night. Maintenance man was stealing from rooms. Staff wasn't very knowledgeable. Food was ok. Cleanliness was average. My mom wasn't doing very well and passed say in June. Not the Oaks fault. She was 94 years old. Overall I would rate them a 2 on your 1-5 scale. We were looking g for a place to move her too when she passed. Hope this helps steer people away from the Oaks.

Has room for improvement.

Staff was friendly and helpful, but the place was sorely understaffed. My husband was left alone in his room for hours at a time with no one checking on him. At one point he fell onto the floor and laid there for over an hour before someone realized what had happened. Food was mediocre and it took a very long time to get served because caretaking staff also served the food and there were not enough of them to get meals in a timely manner. There seemed to be adequate activities offered. It's just that my husband did not participate. My husband was there at The Oaks in respite care. I expected him to get more attention than was offered. We ended up having to hire our own sitters to keep him safe and avoid falls.

Not a good place for memory care

Some of the staff are wonderful and very kind. Some of the staff are brought in as outside contractors and they can tend to be cold, rough, and not caring. The facility director was great upon move in and then could not be bothered after that point when presented with issues or feedback. We documented problems with cleanliness. In one case, we noticed some food that fell on the floor in the common area sat there for 2 weeks and no one cleaned it up. Finally, my father cleaned it himself. The wrong medication was administered multiple times to my mother. Medication was allowed to run out and we had to take care of it ourselves. Special dietary needs such as being diabetic are not followed and no one checks to make sure the right meal is going to the right person. My mother is diabetic and she was given sugary foods on multiple occasions. We had to assign someone from our family to be with her at all times due to how poor the care and food handling was. After a few months, we had to pull her from this facility. If someone is looking for memory care for their loved one, I would suggest someplace else.

Trying not to be very negative but the facility did a poor job on all the thing we ask of them. My mother room was never clean we had several meetings about this and always had a excuse for the reason the room was not clean. Also asked for her bathing schedule and when it did not happen again excuse's. We did some walk-in visit and had the director go to the room on the day of cleaning and she was able to see why we had been comparing the next week when I did a visit the room was spotless and with that said that was the only time her room was clean in the year she was there This was a very disappointing we did not want to move my mother around from one place to another

lacking quality care

Adequate, competent staffing would improve quality of care. Spoke with Wellness Director on two occasions. Bed sheets on bed for two weeks with urine stains not changed. Only time changed is when family and I change them. When washing clothes I assume everything is going in one wash wet pads and clothes. Everything reeks of urine. Laundry basket nor the last clothes washed ever returned back to room. Had to buy another basket. With no laundry basket clothes were piled up in room, for two weeks. Room smelled awful. Family took laundry home to give everything a good wash. I am very unhappy about the haphazard quality of care.

Services not as advertized

The care givers are winderful. Management has unrealistic expectations on them, not taking into account each residents personality and temperament. Don’t let the smell test fool you. They use a lot of spray deodorant and freshener. Rooms are not kept up. They will tell you they check on residents regukarly. They don’t. Sometimes all night long they are left in their rooms with no one checking. The place is beautiful. Just very poorly run. Very sad. No compassion and no love.

A few upgrades needed

I liked the place because it was close to where I live. However, the place needs upgrading, medical grade beds, better food, create a system to wash clothes so they dont get lost or given to another patient. Actual activities and not just ones posted on a calendar. Work on staffing, they were consistently changing staff. Making it difficult to build a relationship to make sure my loved one received good care. Good thing he was always clean and in clothes.

Room for Improvement

Understaffed and few resources with proper qualifications to take care of residents. Multiple turnover of leadership personnel in short period of time. Some heroes but not enough. There is a lot of room for improvement here.

Not what it used to be

The Oaks was bought out by a corporation about a year and half ago. It was called [community removed] and since having my mother in there for a year it has declined. No housekeeping, no maintenance, and my mother hasn’t had a shower in 23 days as I type this. The staff are exhausted and overworked and are letting the family members know! They need help! I am so disappointed that corporate has not stepped in and provided help in trying to adequately staff the facility. Perhaps offering employees better wages and incentives would help-they are taking on new residents but not employees. The emergency call button system went out for two days and they gave them whistles to blow. My mother sat in urine for 32 minutes. A resident walked out through an unlocked door and she was found outside the next morning by a ditch. Thank God she was ok. These things have all occurred in the last MONTH!

tour review

Our family had an in person tour with Oaks at Habersham and the reason for the overall rating is simply because they seemed confused. We had an appointment and we waited for like 30 minutes before anyone came to talk with us. So we were turned off pretty quick there. Plus there pricing to is was a little steep for that place.

Review of Oaks at Charleston

I would tell a friend to keep looking. We picked this community, because of the price, and everything looked great. I am happy with the service that I received from the Rep at A Place for Mom. Other than that, they need to improve on a few things, as it relates to medication mangement, and their payment processes.

Dont put your loved one in memory care

I am pretty unhappy with the service. I have let them know my concerns, and nothing they have done has resulted in resolving things. They can improve by providing proper care for the residents. My loved one is not being properly taken care of.

Tour experience

The Oaks at Salem Road does not have a memory unit and had not been renovated for some time. I felt my mom would be in a memory unit in the next few years. . The Individual at Oaks at Salem Road who gave the tour was new and, in my opinion, not well suited to leading tours yet.
